It’s like that feeling when you’ve been waiting at the edge, looking over and over at the water below, panic and adrenaline pulsing through your body, and then finally just when you think you might never be able to do it, you take a few steps back, run and JUMP!”
— Molly James

In the midst of a global pandemic, the question on everyone’s mind is “how do we stay safe?”

Molly James’ “Safe” gently pokes at this primal question with the notion that “there’s no such thing as safe in love…there’s no such thing as safe, anyhow.” The subtext here is “knowing there’s no guarantee, what are you going to do with your one wild and precious life?”

“I’ve spent a lot of time in my life, giving up on love before it could even begin, telling myself that there was no way that person would want me, or worrying about what could happen to a friendship if I told the truth and admitted I had romantic feelings. This song is about that moment when I realized that if I wanted to truly live I had to be willing to take the risk and just GO FOR IT.”

“It’s like that feeling when you’ve been waiting at the edge, looking over and over at the water below, panic and adrenaline pulsing through your body, and then finally just when you think you might never be able to do it, you take a few steps back, run and JUMP!”

Safe’s upbeat, throwback feel sways and soars. Molly’s lush soulful voice and heartfelt message combine with punchy horns and tight interlocking instrumentals to create a track that can’t help but leave feeling a little more hopeful.

This is Molly James’s first official release. The song was co-written and recorded with singer, songwriter and producer, Benji Marx in Oakland, CA. The officially music video was created by Bay Area based film maker, Johnny Mark.

Molly James Bio

Music is medicine, apply liberally!  Molly’s soulfully rich voice greets you with open arms and a nod of recognition: we’re in this together. With ukulele in hand, she offers music that speaks to the dynamism of our human experience. Joy, grief, family, violence, love, patriarchy; nothing is off limits. Her work is embedded in a vision for healing the wounds of our world.

Molly came to music later in life. But her love of words and melody were always with her, a secret dream too precious to speak. But - to quote Anais Nin - "the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” And so, she finally let her petals unfurl.

She created and lead the Bay Area’s feminist-driven 9 Lives Music Collective.  She lead the minimalist folk band Tooth and Talon, and then the jazz-dipped Molly James Band. In October 2020, we’ll release her first debut single, “SAFE” with an official music video directed by Johnny Mark.
